Can Metal Cards Have Different Names, Numbers and QR Codes?

Yes. Custom metal cards can be made with different names, numbers, serial codes, membership information, and QR codes on each card.
This is commonly called variable data. It is often used for metal membership cards, VIP cards, hotel cards, NFC business cards, event cards, limited-edition cards, and numbered authentication cards.

However, variable information on metal cards is not produced in the same way as normal paper printing. The best production method depends on the card color, surface finish, required color, QR code density, and how the data will be used.
In this guide, we explain the main production options based on real metal card manufacturing experience.
What Is Variable Data on Metal Cards?
Variable data means each card has different information.
Common examples include:
- Different customer names
- Different membership numbers
- Different serial numbers
- Different QR codes
- Different NFC links
- Different access codes or identification codes
For example, 200 metal membership cards may use the same card design, but each card may have a different member name, member number, and QR code.
This is especially common for custom metal membership cards, where each card may need a different member name, number, QR code, or access code.
If the card also needs tap-to-share functionality, variable QR codes can be combined with metal NFC business cards for both scanning and NFC interaction.
Can Both Sides Have Variable Data?
Yes. The front and back of the card can both have variable data.
For example, the front side can have a different name and number, while the back side has a different QR code or link.
This is possible, but the data must be matched very carefully. If the name, number, and QR code belong to the same person, the front and back information must be correctly paired during production.
This type of order is more complicated than single-sided variable data, but it can be done with proper file preparation and careful production control.
1. Laser Engraving for Variable Names, Numbers and QR Codes
Laser engraving is one of the most common methods for variable information on metal cards.
The position is controlled by computer software. Once we make a positioning fixture for the card, each card can be placed in the same position and engraved more consistently.
Laser engraving is suitable for:
- Variable names
- Variable numbers
- Serial numbers
- Membership numbers
- Variable QR codes
For variable laser engraving, we prefer customers to provide an Excel file instead of a vector file. The Excel data can be imported into our engraving software, which is more efficient and helps reduce manual errors.
Laser Engraving Color Effect
On plated stainless steel cards, laser engraving usually removes the surface finish and exposes the stainless steel base underneath.
On matte black, gold, rose gold, gunmetal, and other plated stainless steel cards, the engraved area usually appears as a rough matte silver stainless steel color.
In some cases, laser can also create a darker grey or blackened effect by engraving repeatedly in the same area. This looks more like a burnt dark grey effect, not a printed black color.
If the customer wants the variable information to be white, gold, red, or another specific color, screen printing is usually a better choice.
2. Screen Printing for Variable Names, Numbers and QR Codes
Screen printing can also be used for variable names, numbers, and QR codes.
This is especially useful when the customer wants the variable information to appear in a selected color instead of the rough silver color normally created by laser engraving.
For screen-printed variable information, we usually prepare the names, numbers, or QR codes on the computer according to the required font, size, and position. Then we output the information to film, make the screen, and print the information onto the metal cards.
Customers can provide a prepared vector file for screen printing. If they only have an Excel file, we can also prepare the vector layout based on the required font, size, and position.
Position Tolerance for Screen Printing
Screen printing requires manual alignment during production. The position is controlled by the screen, card fixture, and visual checking.
Because of this, a small position tolerance may occur, especially when the variable information has no clear reference point, border, recessed area, or fixed design element for alignment.
This does not mean the card cannot be produced. It means the artwork should allow reasonable positioning tolerance.
Color on Dark Metal Cards
Bright screen-printed colors on dark metal cards may be affected by the dark base color.
For example, if a bright color is printed on a matte black card, the final color may look darker or less vivid than expected.
For matte black cards, if the customer accepts a silver result, laser engraving is often a more stable option for variable information because the positioning is controlled by computer.
This is why matte black metal business cards are often a practical choice when the design includes laser engraved names, numbers, or QR codes.
If the customer requires a specific color, such as white, gold, red, or black, screen printing is usually recommended.
3. Why UV Printing Is Not Usually Recommended for Variable Data
UV full-color printing is mainly suitable when the same full-color artwork is printed repeatedly on every card.
It is useful for photographs, gradients, shadows, and complex multicolor designs.
However, UV printing is not normally our preferred method for variable names, numbers, or QR codes.
If every card has different information, the printing file needs to be changed repeatedly. The card position and artwork alignment also need to be checked carefully for each variation.
This makes production slower and increases the risk of positioning problems.
For this reason, we usually recommend laser engraving or screen printing for variable data instead of UV printing.

4. Can Chemical Etching Be Used for Variable Data?
Technically, chemical etching can be used for different names or numbers, but it is usually not recommended.
Because each card has different content, each card needs different artwork and separate processing. This increases cost and makes production more complicated.
If one card has a quality issue, the same variable number or name may need to be etched again, which can extend the production time.
For most variable data orders, laser engraving or screen printing is a more practical solution.
5. Which Process Is Best for QR Codes?
The best process for QR codes depends on the card color, QR code density, surface finish, and required visual effect.
Laser Engraved QR Codes
Laser engraved QR codes usually work very well on matte black metal cards.
After laser engraving, the black surface is removed and the rough silver stainless steel base is exposed. This creates strong contrast between the black surface and the silver QR code, making it easy to scan in most cases.
Brushed gunmetal cards can also be suitable for laser engraved QR codes because the dark grey surface still provides good contrast with the silver engraved area.
Screen-Printed QR Codes
For other card colors, such as gold, rose gold, antique copper, matte white, or lighter finishes, we usually recommend printing the QR code in one clear color.
A screen-printed QR code, such as black on gold or black on rose gold, usually provides better visual contrast and reduces scanning risk.
For luxury projects, gold metal business cards are often combined with black screen-printed names, numbers, or QR codes for better readability.
This is especially important when the QR code is dense or when the customer wants the final card to have a clean and premium appearance.
6. How Large Should a QR Code Be on a Metal Card?
There is no fixed minimum size for QR codes on metal cards.
The suitable size depends on the density of the QR code. If the QR code contains only a short URL or simple information, the pattern is usually less dense and the internal lines are thicker. In this case, the QR code does not need to be very large, as long as it looks suitable and scans easily.
If the QR code contains more information, the pattern becomes more dense and the internal details become smaller. In that case, the QR code should be made larger to improve scanning reliability.
A practical way to test the size is to print the QR code on white paper at the same 1:1 size as the final metal card design. If the QR code scans easily on paper at that size, it is usually a good starting point for production.
However, the final metal card result can still be affected by the surface finish, contrast, printing method, engraving method, and reflection.
7. Do QR Codes Need Extra White Space?
For our metal card production, the most important factor is contrast and clarity.
A QR code does not always need a large extra blank area around it if the contrast is strong and the QR code is clean.
However, the QR code should not be placed in a way that makes the details unclear. Strong contrast, clear edges, and a suitable size are more important than simply adding a large blank area.
8. File Requirements for Variable Data
Correct data files are very important for variable metal cards.
For Laser Engraving
For laser engraved variable information, we prefer an Excel file.
Please do not make all variable data into vector artwork if laser engraving is required. Excel is usually better because the data can be imported directly into the engraving software.
For Screen Printing
For screen-printed variable information, customers can provide prepared vector files.
If customers only have Excel data, we can also prepare the production artwork according to the required font, size, and position.
For QR Codes
For QR codes, we prefer receiving the original links instead of QR code images.
If customers provide links, we can generate clear and consistent QR codes for production. This helps keep the QR code size, style, and quality more consistent.
QR code images are not the best option because they may be low resolution, compressed, inconsistent in size, or difficult to match correctly with the card data.

9. Important Data Preparation Tips
Before production, customers should check all variable data carefully.
Please pay attention to:
- Name spelling
- Number order
- Repeated numbers
- Missing numbers
- QR code links
- Correct front and back matching
- Different design versions
- Very small text size
Variable text should not be too small. Very small names, numbers, or QR codes may reduce readability or scanning reliability.
If names, numbers, and QR codes must match each other, the Excel file should be prepared clearly so the correct information can be applied to the correct card.
10. Which Method Should You Choose?
Choose Laser Engraving When:
- You need variable names, numbers, or QR codes.
- The card is matte black or brushed gunmetal.
- You want strong contrast from silver engraving.
- You need more accurate positioning controlled by computer.
- You accept the rough matte silver stainless steel engraving effect.
Choose Screen Printing When:
- You need variable information in a specific color.
- You want white, gold, red, black, or another printed color.
- The card color is gold, rose gold, antique copper, matte white, or another finish where printed contrast is safer.
- You need a one-color QR code with strong contrast.
- You do not want the variable information to appear silver.
Avoid UV Printing When:
- Every card has a different name, number, or QR code.
- The variable information requires accurate positioning on each card.
- The design requires repeated file changes during production.
UV printing is better for fixed full-color artwork, photographs, gradients, and complex multicolor designs that are the same on every card.

Metal cards can absolutely be produced with different names, numbers, serial codes, and QR codes.
For matte black cards, laser engraving is usually a very practical solution because it creates strong silver contrast and accurate positioning.
